The Havana Brown, also know as Swiss Mountain Cat, is a rare breed of domesticated cat often thought to be of Cuban descent, even though it is actually from the UK.
History[]
The Havana Brown was first shown at a show in England in the 1890s. To make this breed, breeders bred a brown cat with a Siamese. Many often comment as the 'Non-Blue Eyed Siamese'. During World War I and World War II, the Havana Brown population suffered and went down. But after World War II, in the 1950s, breeders started to restore the Cat Breed. The ladies credited with bringing back the Havana Brown are Mrs. Armitage Hargreaves of Laurentide Cattery, Mrs. Munroe-Smith of Elmtower Cattery, the Baroness Von Ullmann of Roofspringer Cattery, Mrs. Elsie Fisher of Praha Cattery, and Mrs. Judd of Crossways Cattery. They did this by breeding a black shorthair with a Siamese.
The name may have come from the Cuban Havana cigars as the coat color is the same as the cigar. Also in the 1950s, the breed was shown in America and Britain, despite this the breed is very rare in the U.S. In the late 1990s, in Britain, there were only around 140 Havana Browns.
A article[1] estimates that fewer than 1,000 Havana Browns exist in the world, while this claim hasn't been supported, Nancy Robbin's book, Domestic Cats: Their History, Breeds and Other Facts (2012) says that by the late 1990s, there were only 12 CFA-registered Havana Brown cats, and only 130 pedigreed cats, left in the U.S.
Personality[]
The phrase "Chocolate delights" is often used by Havana Brown enthusiasts to describe this breed's personality. Havana Browns have a strong desire for human interaction and will remain by a person’s side, trying to participate in whatever they are doing. However, if denied human interaction the it may become lonesome and morose.
They are alert, intelligent, affectionate and occasionally exhibit a mischievous personality. Their a playful and affectionate cat that enjoys being in a lap. The breed also loves to touch and nudge with its paws; it even loves playing fetch. It is also extremely adaptable, rarely throwing tantrums. Havana Browns require daily, regular interaction with their people and can benefit from a game of fetch to curb its energy.
Appearance[]
One special trait of the Havana Brown is their brown whiskers that match their tobacco-colored coat. No other cat shares this feature, and the brown whiskers have even become a standard of the breed to be considered a registered pedigree.
They are great runners and have an athletic build, similar to the Siamese.

- The Havana Brown is the only all-brown cat breed from nose to tail, with the exception of its eyes.
