The Rex mutation is what makes cats curly coated like the Selkirk Rex, the Cornish Rex, the German Rex, the Devon Rex, and the LaPerm. They occur because of changes in the structure of groups of hairs and cross-section of individual hairs. They occur not only in cats but also rats, rabbits, dogs, and horses.
